In recent years, the interest of the scientific community has been focused on the 2 most important carotenoids: lutein and zeaxanthin, as an increasing amount of evidence demonstrates the beneficial effect of their consumption (especially lutein) in maintaining normal vision with increasing age.
Lutein is a yellow carotenoid that is not made by the body and therefore should be taken through diet or supplements. Like all carotenoids, lutein is a powerful antioxidant, eliminating free radicals. This biological role of lutein is particularly important, as lutein is found in high amounts in the macula. The macula is the part of the retina that is responsible for detailed vision. Lutein is also a natural filter of ultraviolet radiation that can cause macular degeneration.
