Vitamin B12 is the only natural product that contains cobalt, and to which it owes its vivid red color. In humans it is difficult to observe a pure form of avitaminosis B12. It is usually accompanied by a lack of folic acid and the endogenous factor. The latter is produced by the oxyntic cells of the stomach and upon its deficiency (achlorhydria), malabsorption of vitamin B12 occurs. B12 after being absorbed with the help of the endogenous factor has 3 important biological actions :

- Acts as a coenzyme to folic acid for DNA synthesis
- Participates in the synthesis of nerve myelin
- It has anti-atherosclerotic action.

Vitamin B12 is found in foods of animal origin, such as meat. For this reason, doctors usually recommend that vegetarians take vitamin B12 supplements.
