Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) are a form of soluble carbohydrate found in many vegetables, such as endives and onions. When taken orally, they are only partially absorbed, as most of them are used as a nutrient substrate for the growth of the normal intestinal bacterial flora (mainly includes the genera Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus).
This results in the prebiotic action of fructo-oligosaccharides, ie the growth of bacteria of the normal intestinal flora and the reduction of pathogenic bacteria and fungi. The prebiotic function of FOS leads to the improvement of intestinal tone, the regulation of peristaltic bowel movements and the improvement of gastrointestinal discomfort due to intestinal dysfunction.
Nutritional research has shown that the daily intake of 8g of FOS for a period of 2 weeks is accompanied by an increase in the number of bacteria of the normal intestinal flora (Prebiotic effect).
More specifically, it is accompanied by a tenfold increase in Bifidobacteria, a threefold increase in Lactobacilli, while it also causes a simultaneous one-time decrease in pathogenic Bacteriodes microbes.
