Cholesterol is synthesized with the help of an enzyme whose coenzyme, ubiquinone, is known as Q10. Statins, which are drugs that significantly reduce cholesterol production, owe their effectiveness to blocking the action of coenzyme Q10, whose action is regulated by the insulin-glucagon hormones. Insulin favors the production of cholesterol, while glucagon, on the contrary, reduces it. Both of these hormones are activated by eicosanoids, i.e. the biochemical products of omega-fatty acid metabolism. Coenzyme Q10 is necessary for the production of energy in all cells and especially in those found in organs that consume large amounts of energy, such as the heart. It is found in the liver in high concentration and converts food energy into cellular energy, supplying it to the whole body, including the heart muscle.
